Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen.

June 30th, 2009

We’d like to remind everyone who visits Lollygaggin’ Outdoors in Colonial Beach, VA that weather you are just laying on the beach or renting a kayak, it’s always important to apply sunscreen. If you are having trouble, just ask a friend to help.

Don\’t Forget Your Sunscreen!

A Look Inside

June 30th, 2009

Having a shop here on the beach may be the most entertaining endeavor, aside from motherhood, I have ever undertaken.

I have my “River Rats”, who are teens not quite old enough to drive.   They  hang out around the window with their skateboards and keep me entertained with their antics, whether it be the latest boardwalk gossip, or doing back flips off the pier, or running away from the cops because there are no skateboards allowed on the boardwalk.    They are good kids who are addicted to Hawaiian shave ice and will do menial tasks around the shop in order to earn one, or two.

Then there’s Hank.   I am not sure of Hank’s back story, but I am sure there is one there, I am also not sure if I really want to know what it is.  I do know that he and his wife live in a church about an hour away, they drive here to the river every day, even borrowing money for gas if needed, because they believe CBVA is paradise.  Hank is usually a little short on cash so I allow him to run a tab and he always pays me each Friday and leaves me with a handshake.

And then of course there is Antwan.  He can be found daily riding his bike all over town stopping to give a “HEEEEEYYY!” to everyone.  The dude has never met a stranger.  If you want the latest scoop Antwan has it.  Each and every day he stops by the shop, looks at the menu and asks me what kind of drinks we have.

There are so many more “regulars” to tell you about and I have come to look forward to seeing each and every one of these people.  They are always entertaining and just go about life in their own very unique way.  From time to time, I’ll be giving you a peek from my window to the world via video.  Come back and check it out.  And by all means, come to the beach and see it for yourself!

Catch ya later,

Mama Yak

Time is flying!

August 10th, 2008

Well, where to begin…So much has happened this year in the Lollygaggin’ Outdoors family.

First, well…we opened our doors! What a huge feat that was! Never thought it would happen. But we pressed on and did it!

Second, our dreams of having our 3 boys here at our side while we lived the capitalist dream did not exactly pan out. As it turns out a 2 year old does not find sitting in a small shop all day, selling shave ice and renting kayaks all that exciting. In fact, it makes him scream. A lot. Sooo…we had to make some adjustments to our hours in order to keep the little screamer at bay.

* Sunday 1:30 to 7:00
* Monday 12:00 to 6:00
* Tuesday Closed
* Wednesday Closed
* Thursday 12:00 to 6:00
* Friday 12:00 to 9:30
* Saturday 11:00 to 9:30

And Third, we had a baby!!  Holy Cow what a busy summer it has been!!

So forgive our first year flightiness, we are still getting the hang of things.  But we are already thinking about how we can improve (HAVE YOU SEEN OUR LOWER PRICES???) and things we can add for next year!

So check back here for the latest in Lollygaggin’ news and antics.

GO PADDLE!

King of the Beach

June 5th, 2008

Sometimes I’m not sure who is more excited about our new business, but there is no doubt in my mind who the King of Colonial Beach is — my son W. See the kid with the red crocs?

Yesss, that’s Dubs for ya… the center of the universe. He is the sweetest kid you’ll ever meet, and he’s never met a stranger (truly a great way to be). He’s also pretty good advertisement for us too! He’ll walk the beach with a shaved ice or some cotton candy or some other snack shop contraband, and it’s been more than once that I’ve had kids come up to me and say “We want what he has” :-).

Here’s Dubs gearing up for a glorious day:

Starting up this business has been challenging, but wow, how rewarding! Our sons have enjoyed the shop as much (or more!) as us, and we have met sooo many nice people who are happy that we’re here (and believe me, we’re happy too)!

Got Boats?

April 10th, 2008

Well, we do… now! What a great trip we had! We dropped the 2 older boys off at my in-laws in Lynchburg and had a nice drive to Farmville and visited Appomattox River Company. Our youngest E had a pretty nice time too, throwing rocks in the parking lot and “helping” get the kayaks on the rack (heck, the rack is new too!):

Here’s another angle — how about the job the boys at ARC did tying down the kayaks!:

It was such a beautiful day, wonderful drive, and great experience at ARC… we highly recommend it! So now we’re actually getting somewhere, now it’s time to start fixing up the shack!
